Emile Heskey Continues to Impress in A-League

Former England striker, Emile Heskey, continued his blistering start to his A-League career with his second goal in consecutive games to help the Newcastle Jets to a 2-1 victory against Central Coast in a fiery F3 derby.

The big front-man won the penalty that put the Jets in the lead, with Ryan Griffiths converting, and scored the second to give the hosts their second win of the season. But there was more than the performance of Heskey to leave manager, Gary van Egmond, pleased with the way his team collected the victory.

The performances of the younger members of the team, most notably Craig Goodwin and James Virgili, have been a real revelation for the Jets, making headlines in the news soccer pages.

Winger, Virgili, was especially impressive in the Central Coast win, linking up well with Heskey and setting up the Englishman for his second goal in the Newcastle colours.

"It was good to see (Virgili) put in a performance like that. He is going to derive a lot of confidence from that, as well. The youngsters are really beginning to gel nicely with the experienced players and that showed against the Mariners.”

And on the club’s highest profile arrival, van Egmond praised Heskey for his all-round performance, which again showed just why the former Liverpool star had such a long and illustrious career in the English Premier League before heading Down Under.

"Emile has basically had an assist with the first goal and scored the second so we are very happy with him. He’s been great since he’s been here, but he’ll get even better with the more games he plays."

Even at this early point in the season, the signs are looking good for the Jets. If Heskey can continue to score goals, and the youngsters continue to build on their impressive early-season form, the Jets could soon find themselves up for the title in the A League betting stakes.
