I first started playing online poker in 2000 and by 2002 I was playing the game full time. My best ever years were between 2003 and 2004 where my earnings were far and away higher than what they had ever been in my entire life. However my game stagnated and by 2008 I was no longer making money.

It is only now looking back that I can see as plain as day where the problems were. I simply stopped learning the game. Because online poker was so new in 2000 then the game evolved very rapidly. The changes in playing dynamics were huge and in 2003 and 2004 then there were many fish playing at high levels.

These days you don’t have to play all that high to encounter very sophisticated players which as a rule happens by the time you reach NL100 and certainly NL200. Not only did the game evolve but many very intelligent people were bringing their full weight to bear on the subject of poker and the game went through somewhat of a massive revolution when people all over the world noticed how much money was being wagered daily.

So anyone that didn’t retool their game between 2005-2008 was going to be in very serious trouble and quickly left behind. Today’s new players sort of have it easy and hard at the same time. They have it easy in so much that the game has evolved more and there has been a settling process of late. So any player that becomes very good in 2012 is far less likely to have a game that is no longer good enough in five years’ time. However the players around today are much better than they were ten years ago and this is the part of the game that is tougher.

However here is the good news, if you wanted to start out as an online poker player then how much could you expect to make without playing nosebleed levels or becoming one of the very best? I believe that with very good coaching and a solid grasp of the fundamentals that a player could crush NL50 and if you could multi-table that level then $50/hr is possible.

That equates to 10ptbb/100 which is $10/100 hands and if you can play say eight tables at full ring then you could be seeing something like 600 hands per hour. However it does require a player to become more concerned with studying poker than trying to rush the process and make as much money as they could as soon as they could. The lesson is that you need to learn to walk before you can run.
