The Houston Backgammon Club

The popularity of backgammon in USA, can be seen in one particular State: Texas as it always seems to be full of backgammon events throughout the year. Major tournaments take place at 1 PM on the 2nd Saturday of every month with the minor ones taking place every Thursday at 6 PM. To compliment these events entertainment and refreshments are catered for with a bottle of cold beer the number one request. Interested players can find event information including admission fees for the tournaments with an average being of for the Major 9pts with 7pt consolation and $10 or $20 optional side pools. The minors are 7pts single elimination; no consolation: Calcutta auction.

First! First! First! The Houston Backgammon Club welcomed 2003 with a lot of 'firsts'! First tournament of the year; first tournament at the new location, (Sans one’s West Oaks Bar); and first tournament to reach the 32-player limit. But every joy has some sorrow behind! A lot of players had to be turned away even after Director Tom Wright’s self – withdrawal. The 'New Year's Special' was really hot and heavy in terms of prize money and the final honours were showered upon Josh Danart, who had won the competition. Experts say the new 9-point H.B.C. format seemed to suit Josh to a 'T'.

For those who like to collect facts and figures only Dr. James Bray has ever won two H.B.C. majors in a row in our four plus years of existence in June and July of 2002.

The Houston Backgammon commemorates annually the loss of the astronauts of the Columbia space shuttle holding a Memorial Backgammon Tournament on February 12, 2005 as tribute. Among the eminent players, Scott Ward won the Houston's RWB Backgammon Event held on June 10, 2005.
