Playing Backgammon - Some Essentials

Check the Pack:

First unpack the case to ensure whether all the items are there. Essentially the pack should contain the following:

- Checkers of two colours-usually black and white (15 of each)
- Two dice
- Dice cup holder
- Doubling cube.

The Board should be divided into four sections, these are known as quadrants. There should be a Bar which is a central vertical thick strip, equally dividing the board.

Check the Board Arrangement:

The board should be placed absolutely flat. Leaning or twisting of the board should be totally avoided. It’s advisable to place the board on a flat table without any tilt. The doubling cube needs to be situated exactly in the middle of the board, which means on the bar with a face showing '64'. Ensure the numbers are placed correctly starting with 1 from the nearest lower-right corner of yours and ending with 24 at the top left corner at the rear side of yours, which is the nearest side of your opponent’s. Always count the points clockwise starting from the outer board.

Placement of Checkers:

Place five checkers on the 6th point, three on the 8th point, five on 13th point and the remaining two on the 24th point. The same rule is applicable to your opponent also.

Start the Game:

Two opponents should sit just face-to-face bridging the board in-between. Choose the colour for you and your opponent (Black & White). This can be decided mutually or by throwing the dice. Throw a single die to decide the first move. Remember, the one who scores higher will move first. If the first set of throws remains indecisive, repetition of throws is a must.

Follow the Basic Rules:

1. The dice needs to be thrown correctly from a reasonable height to ensure proper bounce and a smooth roll. If the dice falls on a checker or goes outside the table, then the roll becomes invalid. A valid roll is only when the dice has reached the resting phase on the playing surface.
2. The number of moves is determined by throwing both the dice. It will be multiplied in the case of double and redouble. You may move the greater number if you consider one of the two dice. You may move all the pips as shown by the dice. A player must use both the numbers of a roll if possible. Occasionally only one number can be played and at other times neither can be played. In the latter scenario the player loses their turn.
3. Both of the opponents’ moves must be in anti-clockwise direction.
4. You must move onto open points only. You may move checkers in pairs or in singles.
5. If your checker lands up in a blot, then the opponent’s checker is removed and placed in the bar. Checkers of both colours can not co-exist.
6. Bearing Off is only allowed when one you have moved all your checkers to the quadrants of your home board. Throw the dice to determine the numbers for bearing them off the board.
