Just Add Salt to Backgammon

Earlier this year Gatwick Airport in the UK was the setting for what was described as the world's biggest backgammon board, located close to the runway this gigantic backgammon board could be seen quite clearly on take-offs and arrivals.

The board was designed to promote the first one million dollar tournament due to be staged in 2007.

This unusual presentation of a backgammon board is not alone, there have been several interpretations and representations in a variety of materials of the backgammon board, but undoubtedly perhaps the quirkiest and also the most creative is the one by New York Artist and Sculptress Bettina Wernber (The Salt Queen) who created in 2005 a backgammon board made of salt.

This ingenious design was made to celebrate the Venice Film Festival and The Salt Queen Foundation, a charitable organisation set up to expand the culture and diversity in art to bring peace and harmony to a pot-pouri of cultures and races through its pieces.

The board was made of Sicilian Salt and the points decorated with colourful multicoloured triangles. This centre piece was not only decorative, but also playable; and a tournament with a top prize of $5,000 was available to the winner. The winner also surprised in that they had to play against the Salt Queen on the board, to win the coveted design.

The event staged in New York attracted over a thousand people and raised a considerable amount for the Salt Queen Foundation. Among the glitterati who attended The Salt Backgammon Tournament 'Una Notte di Sale, were sponsor of the event American shoe designer Stuart Weitzman, whose superb creations adorn the feet of Hollywood starlets as they parade down the their red-carpet walks.

Esteemed dignitaries such as Prince Carlo Giovannelli, and Countess Marta Marzotto, were invited to roll a salt dice for good luck and to set the games in motion. Also in attendance were Isabella Borromeo, and Mothassan Gheddafi, whose arrival prompted a rush of paparazzi and a crowd of bodyguards as well as beautiful girls. TV host Michele Mirabella, Professor Stefano Bonaga, Senator Ugo Bergamo were also special guests for the evening.

This unique evening provided a stage for backgammon to be seen in a new light, it showed how backgammon the game can be transformed by a little imagination and how backgammon can be integrated into an art form in its own right.
