How to Play Skill Gammon

An occassional series of new and original backgammon games.

Skill Gammon - The idea of a choice of dice seems an alien idea when playing backgammon , as the randomness of the actual roll, would appear to have disappeared with the element of five choices of dice. This and the time eleemnt of 10 muinutes per game, gives the Skill ammon game anew and fresh appraoch to the original backgammon play. It could be just the thing for players who wish to improve their strategical know how before moving on to tournament or money play.

Here's how to play:
Playing red, and opponent playing white. You choose from five differnt dice selections. .To start choose one of the dice rolls displayed in the 'Available Rolls' box. When you are down to the last one five more dice options will appear.in the 'Coming Next' box. Once the final roll is used, these dice move into the 'Available Rolls' box and then become available. Skill Gammon has no doubling cube. There is a time limit of 10 minutes per game. Otherwise, the rules and the play are the same as backgammon.

The Controls:
Once you have selected your choice of roll this cannot be changed..If you are can't use part of a roll or all all of it, a message a message will display. Click to continue. (There is a point to note here- you can select an unusable roll, even if there are usable rolls in the 'Available Rolls' box. This strategedy could be the best play) Moving pieces, click and drag them. yellow arrows will show you all the legal positions for that piece.During opening introductory screens click to skip them.

Scoring:
There are three ways to score: pips, bearing off, and time. (Note: 'pips' are the total number you need to move all of your pieces off the board. 'Bearing off' is removing a piece from the board.) The game starts with 1000 points.

Then:
As you reduce your pips, your score is increased by that amount.
As your opponent's pips decreases, your score is decreased by that amount.
As you bear off a piece, your score goes up by 25 points.
As your opponent bears off a piece, your score goes down by 25 points.
With the end of the game, you receive a time bonus based on the following formula:
Time Bonus = ( Time Remaining * 800 ) / Time Limit
There is no time bonus if you quit in mid-game.

Game Strategy:
Limit your opponent's choices by forming as many blocks (two or more pieces on a point) as possible. Form valuable blocks in your home court. Avoid leaving blots (single vulnerable pieces), in your home court being knocked off here loses a lot of pips. Then look for other available rolls. This game allows you to try moves too risky in regular backgammon, but which are safe in Skillgammon because no upcoming roll will result in your being knocked to the bar. When behind try to keep pieces in your opponent's home court as long as possible, keeping open the possibility of knocking your opponent's pieces to the bar.
