The game of Backgammon dates all the way back to 3000 B.C. Itís a game for two people in which each player has fifteen play pieces that are called checkers. The checkers are set up in specific rows on the board. There are a number of points on the board that the checkers are placed and moved onto.

Each player takes turns rolling a set of die, and the checkers are moved according to that roll. The player moves their checkers either two times reflecting the roll on each dice, or they combine the rolls and move one stone. If a player is lucky enough to roll doubles they are entitled to make four moves instead of just two.

The objective of the game is to move all of your checkers to your side of the board and then to take them off one-by-one. The process of taking them off is referred to in backgammon as 'Bearing- Off'. The first player to bear-off all of their checkers is the winner.

Backgammon is essentially a game of strategy. While your ultimate goal is to get your checkers to your side of the table, you also have to avoid being taken off the board by your opponent. This can happen if you have one stone on a point and your opponent lands on that same point. When this occurs, your stone is placed on the bar in the middle of the board, and you now have to roll the dice to get back on the board. You have to roll a number corresponding to the point that is open.

Once youíve played a few games of backgammon, youíll be well on your way to mastering the basics. With practice, you will be able to play with others and develop your skills further.

Backgammon is a game of skill, luck and intuition. Betting, a basic instinct of human nature throughout the ages has always found innovation in various board games for gambling. The list includes Parcheesi, Tric-Trac, Ludus, Senet. The refined final outcome is Backgammon.
