Isn't it strange how different words and their meanings change with the mood or fashion of the times.

Two examples that spring to mind are gay and swing.

In the early part of the 20th century gay meant a person who was happy, lighthearted somewhat frivolous in appearance and attitude, a happy chappy all in all.

Today gay's are lovers of the same sex, and though the analogy to personality being happy and free maybe similar, the reality is quite different, as is the word swing.

Most people recognize swing as a garden toy, where children play, or a form of music from the forties, or a motion, but again, under a new generation, the word swing, or swinger means a person who indulges in an illicit relationship within their own relationship for an exchange of partners, swapping in other words their partners for fun and frolics in the bedroom and other places.

There is also another meaning for swing, related to backgammon, called naturally a 'Swing Contest'.

This is usually a match where all players start with the same number of chips and play continues until one player is left and has accumulated all the chips.

Providing a player has chips, they can continue playing in the tournament. Players are randomly matched against one another for a Single' game. Each game starts with an initial stake as set by the tournament.

At the start of the game if one of the players has fewer chips than the agreed sum, the initial stake that the player plays is his entire stack, meaning the player would be 'All-in.'

The stakes are raised every few minutes in the tournament, but not during a single game. Progress and ratings are shown at the end of each game.

One of the best ways to calculate the scoring mechanism in these tournaments is with the Chips per Point (CPP): this denotes the number of chips that each point of the game is worth. The value only changes at the end of the game. If you win a regular game and the CPP was equal to 100 and the doubling cube was at 2, you will win 200 chips. This also applies for gammon (2X2) and backgammon (x3) wins.

Oh, yes and one other thing, if you get an invitation to a swing event just be sure that when you got there they don't start swapping car keys with you, if they do you're at the wrong party!
