For the majority of us backgammon is black and white, not just on the board but in its rules. For the purist, changing the way you play the game is forbidden. In some clubs a change in the rules would be seen as a flagrant disregard for the rule of law. 'This is the way we play and there's no changing it. If you don't like it I am taking my board back, so there!

This is conventional backgammon as played by millions online or offline.

But backgammon like sex; would not be exciting; unless you put a little variety into it. This is why you'll find today, many different variations of the game, some you may well know some you may not.

Here are just a couple of examples of the lesser known ones.

Probably the easiest to understand, but not necessarily to play is NO HIT – which has one simple rule - Hit an opponent's checker and you lose. So you have to play cagey, very cagey indeed, defend to the hilt your position, without it becoming compromised. It is one of those games that requires a brain in sync with its owner, one lapse moment and the game is over.

Try it next time you play.

Another slightly more complex game also demanding attention is 'Woodpecker' Or the left handed Player Syndrome: A two-stage doubling rule.

Ambidextrous persons will get a real kick out of this game for once a player has taken the dice the player puts the dice on his left side. Providing it’s always on his left, his opponent can double again -This is the ‘woodpecker’).

If he takes this too, he puts the cube on his right hand side, he then owns it.

So the cube has 5 states instead of just 3:

Center

Blacks left side

Blacks right side

Whites left side

Whites right side

A double can still be played unless the cube is on his opponent's right side.
This makes the game a lot more complex as well as enhancing the stake money.

It also requires you to know what your left and right hand are doing at any one time!!!
