Backgammon Board Essentials

Backgammon is one of the most popular board games in today’s world. This article features information on the boards make up.

Inner and Outer Boards

The board is divided into four quadrants containing six triangles each. Different colours are used for differentiation. Each triangle is called a point. The Board is centrally divided by a ridge partition called a Bar. Each portion has two quadrants. The two sides of the Bar are referred to as Home Boards of the two players. Your Home Board is the one nearer to you and the further one is called the outer Board. The same concept is applicable to your opponent also. Therefore your home board is the outer board for your opponent and the vice versa.

Remember the Bar not only partitions the board between you and your opponent but has other usage also; if any checker is hit, then the checker is placed on the bar.

The various Points

Place five checkers on the 6th point, three on the 8th point, five on the 13th point and the balance two on the 24th point. The same rule is applicable to your opponent also. Now the 13 point, where five checkers are placed in the beginning, is called the mid-point. Now, which one is the bar point? It’s the 7 point, immediate next point of the bar, where no checker is placed in the beginning. There is another point, called the Ace-point. The last point, where you can move, is essentially the 1 point of yours. So again your mid-point is the opponent’s ace-point and vice-versa.

The board is the costliest and the main focal area of the game backgammon. Compromise between the Luxury and your pocket is the key factor for buying a board. But note that the plane surface can never be compromised.
