Backgammon - It is murder

Entering the room, I looked around and saw the usual group of players; each one had their own peculiar characteristic.

Smudgy preferred to lean back in the chair and let his finger slide around his mouse before committing: Roxy was a foxy girl with a heart, as she always seemed to cave in just when you thought she was going to win and win big. Brady was a cool, sleek dude, his manner seemed to reflect his quality of play, how he handled himself in the games was bordering on a pro, but he would never admit to that.

Slim and Jackie seemed to come as a pair, whenever there was a room empty in would step these two. I wasn't sure if they were actually joined at the hip but it seemed that way and this was after all cyber space we're talking here.

Picking who to play was not easy. Every one had their own individual qualities with ratings that betrayed their abilities.

Smudgy was always keen to make a few bucks, but this was not to be his night. I had played Roxy the night before, so she too was out. I would leave Jackie and Slim to play together or at least to find a comparable partner or partners. No, tonight this was going to be just me and Brady.

In a dimly lit room, I took up my seat in front of the PC, I typed just four words onto the screen 'You and me Brady.'

He got the message. The screen flickered for a second as the board flashed up in front of me. The automatic dice rolled and the game began.

Throughout I had played a watching game, but as the movements became more critical, my ploy was to get rid of the pieces as fast as I could, and try to do as much damage as possible to Brady's tactics.

He was a shrewd mover and seemed to sense my every movement.
I knew this was never going to be easy and I had tried to be careful, playing the watching game but I was vulnerable now. I could not afford to leave two spare pieces alone; otherwise he would hit me like a contract killer. Leaving the bar with pieces on it was also a fatal move and I would not be able to do a thing about it.

My only chance was to throw very high numbers and get to the front as quickly as possible, but I sensed this was too late.

The hits came thick and fast and I reeled around unable to do anything about them, as I crumbled in front of him, Brady's ruthless tactics had paid off, and I felt the blood run from my face, as Brady pull the trigger to finish me off.

It was then just a simple matter for him to clean up and he did, so quickly.

For Brady, this was not just a game, this was murder and he revelled in it.
