The strategy of backgammon requires each player no matter how good or bad they are to have a plan, even if your plan fails, always have backup one.
So try to plan and prepare before any encounter, by proper preparation you will be a in a better position to challenge and perhaps win. The most important factor is to avoid gammon or backgammon. One way to do this is to keep the equity table open right in front of you, so that you can change your decision based on facts and probability factors.

This planning starts from the opening roll. If you get a good score from the dice, then you must use it. Never forget that in Backgammon time is the most crucial factor and you can’t afford to lose even a single chance. If you land with a throw of 5/4, take one checker up by 3 and another down by 4 or a 6/6 then you can lead both of your checkers to the 7-point.

The experts tell you the key strategy lies in the distribution of checkers. We all know that the distribution of checkers in pairs always become helpful, but take note of the escape route tactic, always keep the escape route open for each checker. In fact you should aim to keep two escape routes open for each of your checkers.

You will definitely build primes in the away board to forbid the free movement of your opponent ; never losing track of the fact that at one point of time or another you will have to break the prime and prepare for starting your journey back home.
Analyse the return path of each checker initiating a solid plan to guess the right time to break prime. Caution should be maintained throughout these moves as never want to hamper the chances of bearing off.

Try to occupy the equity points, the 4-point and 5-point in the beginning. However, occupying the ace-point is not advantageous. Keep a close watch on the point-5, mainly when your opponent’s checker is placed on the bar. A blockade on the point-5 will forbid the opponent’s checker from entering the board. But don’t try to keep your checkers in low points at the early stage of the game. This will not only make the game ice cold but will cut down your options to in the course of the game.

The difficulty lies when you have to choose between two open options. Say you have got option either to hit or build your blockade. What to do? It entirely depends upon the position of your checkers. If it is in your home board, go for a hit and if it is in the away board never leave the chance to build up the anchor even at the cost of leaving a hit. Similarly, if one of the opponent’s checkers is placed on the bar and you need to break a prime or blockade for hitting, then it’s better to leave the shot. Again the caution is when you are leaving a shot to safeguard your checker first.

If you are trailing badly and you have been can sense defeat then try to hit desperately, while organising your home board. The ground rule of backgammon is that one cannot start bearing off until and unless all the checkers are brought back to the player’s home board. Two points, the 7-point or 9-point become very crucial at a stage, when you are trailing, because it will keep pressure on the mid point (12-point) of the opponent.

In the case of Doubling, trust to Woolsey’s Law for doubling: 'Put yourself in your opponent’s shoes. If you would even think of dropping if doubled, then it must be a good double.' But in case of redouble, you must ensure that you don’t have anything to lose. If it looks like your opponent is going to win the match (not only the game) by the current cube value, then never hesitate to issue a redouble.

Follow this simple basic plan and you could win more than you lose.
