Is Glenn Straub Poised to Re-invent Revel Casino?
News broke in early April that Glenn Straub, the eccentric Floridian mogul known for his ability to buy failing businesses and turn around their fortunes, had completed his offer to purchase Atlantic City's failed Revel Casino Hotel.
The $82 million deal, a fraction of the cost to build the $2.4 billion property, will raise eyebrows in many Atlantic City circles as residents, businessmen and officials begin to wonder what exactly the real estate investor will actually end up doing with the towering, space-age Revel.
Part of the reason why no one really knows what the plans are for the Revel stems from Straub's image. The investor is a proponent of the rather obscure cryogenic cold-temperature treatment, whereby after each and every polo match he indulges in, practitioners apply his body with concentrated doses of minus-260 degree-Fahrenheit nitrogen vapour, this being supplemented by weekly blood transfusions.
Straub believes the treatment can extend the body's lifespan and vigour by twenty years, himself wanting to live well past his one-hundredth birthday.
The tycoon has already said in interviews that, alongside a helipad, a 24-strong fleet of corporate ferrying jets, a casino and a marina designed to accommodate the fleets of the world's oligarchs, he wishes to open up a treatment centre from which he can proselytise his favourite treatment.
All of this, of course, is riding on Straub's gut feeling that Atlantic City is poised to enter a age of regeneration, a renaissance the mogul appears to believe will come riding on the back of the super, super rich.
But should Atlantic City be gunning for such a peculiar renewal? Cryo-treatments and some dice throwing on the side? Gambling has undergone a change in recent years that has seen good, ordinary people become the primary players of casino games, so it is unlikely that Straub's sprawling property will be drawing too many contemporary patrons if and when it opens its doors.
One can safely imagine that people would rather prefer playing online at online casinos such as Uptown Aces if such a regeneration were to occur; taking advantage of 88% match and free spin deals is far more of a conscionable activity than indulging in the pseudo-treatments of the 1%, after all!
Indeed, Straub's plans are already being torpedoed from all angles. ACR Energy Partners, the utility supplying power to the Revel, recently cut the power due to a fee dispute with Straub, a move that has resulted in the property magnate getting hit by a $5000-per-day fine by Atlantic City officials due to there being no electricity within the building.
After Straub brought in generators, the problems continued as the generators did not been New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection regulations! Straub soon after noted that he would take his money out of the Revel if the issues continued. We can only hope!
