Barcelona Confirm Interest in Liverpool Ace Reina

Barcelona have made it clear that they are stepping up their interest in two goalkeepers as they continue plans to bolster their squad in the January transfer window.

Current number one, Victor Valdes, has already confirmed that he will not renew his contract at the Camp Nou, which expires at the end of the season.

That announcement forced Barcelona to target replacements for the outgoing Valdes and they have confirmed that they are interested in signing Marc-Andre Ter Stegen of Borussia Monchengladbach and Liverpool’s Pepe Reina.

"We are looking at a goalkeeper for January," confirmed the club's vice president, Josep Maria Bartomeu. "We are in very advanced negotiation. Our idea is to sign only one goalkeeper. Ter Stegen and Reina are within the range of options, which is already very small."

Germany international, Ter Stegen, who has a contract with Monchengladbach until 2015, was linked to Arsenal in the summer.

Reina’s arrival could be complicated as Liverpool boss, Brendan Rodgers, may choose to bring him back to Anfield from a season-long loan spell with Serie A title-chasers Napoli.

Valdes has said that he would prefer the club to give B team goalkeeper, Jordi Masip, an opportunity to impress in the first team but the betting appears to suggest that Barcelona are keen to bring in a more experienced shot-stopper.

The 31-year-old said: "It would be great if it turned out that someone homegrown was given the chance, but I know how hard that can be."

Valdes made his Barcelona debut more than a decade ago and has gone on to win five La Liga titles, three Champions Leagues and two Copa del Reys. Barcelona are once again among the favourites in the sports betting markets to win the Champions League this season.
