Cole Should Leave West Ham United this Summer

If Carlton Cole is to ever rekindle his goalscoring touch, he should let his contract at West Ham expire this summer and seek a new club and fresh start.

The striker, 29, has reportedly been given a verbal deadline of the last day of the season to agree a new contract with the Hammers but when asked by Sky Sports his representatives gave this statement.

“There was one offer that was discussed in pre-season after which nothing has been discussed since. Carlton is out of contract in the summer and he has always performed at his best whenever he has been called upon.”

Maybe wires have crossed somewhere but it appears as though West Ham, who are gearing up to play Manchester City this weekend, are reluctant to keep Cole on and the player would be wise to jump ship while he can.

The England striker has been restricted to just 27 appearances this season, 16 of which he has started, and since January has made just one appearance. Two goals and a red card over the season is not good enough for a striker with international pedigree and Cole evidently is not part of boss, Sam Allardyce’s plans.

Over the summer, the forward will have free reign to choose where to go, for there are 10 to 12 teams in the top division that could do with a solid goalscorer to improve their Premier League odds for next season.

Cardiff could be a profitable destination, as would Swansea if they lose Michu this summer, while new Sunderland boss, Paolo Di Canio, needs a proven striker before the start of next season.

Cole should rightly rubbish reports of a new contract and instead think about the next step in his career. There is nothing left for a player who has spent seven years and the best part of his career at Upton Park and a move could just well rejuvenate his game.
