My kids go to a christian school and one day my son came home and said that he had played blackjack at school. i contacted the principal and told him about what I had heard and was surprised that he had a "so what" attitude.
am I the only parent who disagrees with this? it's a christian school after all.

Well that depends on if they were playing for bets or playing for fun.

Well, black jack is just a card game....were they exchanging money? If so, that's an entirely different thing and I'd be upset too. However, I don't think people should get upset about playing cards anymore than they should about playing a board game. It's just a game, but like I said, if they're actually using money I'd complain.

Tell him to watch the dealers up card. Double down on any hand you can't break when he shows a 4,5 or 6. He might as well do it right.

did they play it for money or for fun?
I've played blackjack for fun with friends. What's the problem unless it's for money? Why would it be worse than playing monopoly. As long as it's not during lessons. Though it probably could be used to introduce game theory.

learning numbers by playing cards games is a mental exercise...
gambling should be done in the lunch line as it has always been...
gambling in that fashion has no place in school....

that's terrible i'm sorry you got that response. i think gambling in schools isn't a good thing. however in our hebrew school we do let the kids play dreidle around Hanukkah even though it is gambling. i suppose i may want to rethink that too huh?

"Playing blackjack" and "gambling" are related, but are hardly the same thing. I played cards all the time throughout high school, but "gambling" of any sort remained uninvolved. He knows his limitations; fun is allowed in school, as long as it doesn't involve illegal activity.
It's like saying your son painting a wall immediately counts as graffiti. This is most certainly jumping to conclusions, because you don't know if painting the wall was a community service project, for example. You have to do a bit of research onto what your son was actually doing instead of presuming an illegal activity.
By the way, were you seriously trying to get your own son in trouble? How Christian of you.

If there wasn't any money involved it's no big deal. We played spades and poker and who knows what else back when I was in school. As long as no one was betting on it and our other work was finished or we were in study hall, the teachers didn't care.

Playing Blackjack without wagering involved is pointless. They were gambling.
Regardless of your feelings about gambling, it is an inappropriate activity while at school. Compared to many of the problems your principal encounters, it might seen trivial but she should still not allow it. It would be considered inappropriate behavior whether the school was Christian or secular.
