a friend of mine says you can, i say you can't...well...not without becoming a British citizen. but, he says that if you express interest in joining the Royal Navy, citizenship is a faster process...is my friend full of it...
"To be eligible to be processed, at the time of application, a candidate must be a British citizen, or a citizen of a Commonwealth country, or a citizen of the Irish Republic. Also certain career paths are only available to British citizens. Asylum seekers are not eligible for entry into the Naval Service."
In other words, you're both sort of wrong, though he's more wrong than you are. Citizens of the UK, Ireland and any Commonwealth country may apply - this ranges from Australia to Zimbabwe.
They can as an American liaison. When I was in Kuwait, we had the HMA (Her Majesty's Army) who worked with us in our office as British liasions.
Edit - Evidently the person who gave me the thumbs down has no clue to what "liasion" means. Do you think that the Coalition Forces in Iraq don't work side by side with the Americans? Clueless.
Maybe if the "Yank " is living in the UK.
There are precedents for it.
There were American Airmen who served w/ the RAF & RCAF before the US entered WWll but that was a little sneaky.
Norad has joint Canadian / US command.
There are liaison officers that are attached to US & British services to learn from as well as instruct their opposites.
In the US ,resident aliens can enlist in the armed forces.
To be dead sure contact a Royal Navy recruiter,
