My friend and I are arguing about this. I say generally white is the least amount of $ followed by red, blue, green and then black. He says it doesn't matter at all. I say you need to stay consistent because it could get confusing if you play in different groups... so what do YOU think?

I don't think there is a difference, unless I am wrong. But usually, a group who plays together normally decides beforehand what color chip is worth what. I think the colors are just for us to be able to distinguish the different amounts from eachother.

It doesn't really matter. In fact, it's even different at each casino, and there are even separate "tournament" chips that look completely different than cash game chips. This is so the casino can be as sure as possible that there is no foul play going on with foreign chips. For your own homegame(s), it doesn't really matter as long as you are consistent throughout the night or your session.

White = 1
Red = 10
Green = 25
Blue = 50
Black = 100

You will find different variations, but these are the standard values for these chip colors.

There are no hard-and-fast rules. In your kitchen-table poker game, you can assign any value to any color, it does not even need to be conventional units.

In casinos, there are some conventional color schemes.

$1 - white or blue,
$5 - red,
$25 - green,
$100 - black.

I have seen variations on that as well. Harrahs in Reno had black $25 chips, white $100 chips and green $2.50 chips. CalNeva in Reno had brown $25 chips. Some poker rooms also use $10 chips.

Color variety can lead to confusion. I have seen dealers change chips from other casinos for the wrong value.
