yea most of the black people i know...which is a lot of them including me hate BET we only watch it for the music videos...as far as reality shows and other things on there go...they're a waste
BET and many other outlets used to be showcases of culture in varying degrees, now they are just props, puppets that sell entertainment that people feel they need. It's like Dave Chappelle has said time and time again, it's like kids today feel they need to get to dancin, or entertaining in order to please white people and ultimately make that money.
People often talk about culture where rap (mind you I have nothing against rap music, I love many rap artist, however I feel some are just degrading to, well everyone, IMO) is concerned but black people aren't even the number on consumers of the music and the "culture" so really who are they entertaining?
It shows only one aspect of black culture- the ghetto/hood. But I think the network is run by whites so they're probably more interested in manufacturing what is easiest to consume. Hip-hop culture is popular, so that's all they dish out. They may as well call it the Hip-Hop Network. They're a great vehicle for perpetuating stereotypes.
