i.e. If a race has a horse 1 and 1a (or 1b, 1x) and both horses run and share a trainer. . . say the official order of the race is as follows: 1 - 3 - 1a - 7 - 5 and I bet the superfecta (box) 1/3/5/7 would I still win? Never seen it happen but always been curious. Thanks in advance for a solid answer!

Your top finish for the 1 & 1a is what they go by
The 1 ran first so the 1a is first too

For the exotics...
1 - 3 is the winning exacta
1 - 3 - 7 is the trifecta
1 - 3 - 7 - 5 is the superfecta

For your normal pools
The 1 gets the Win Place Show payouts
the 3 gets the Place & Show payouts
the 7 gets the Show payout
The 5 gets nothing he is fourth

You would get the superfecta. it would go 1/3/7/5 as far as the exotics order--it has to pay to four consecutive numbers, so the repeated number is ignored. In WPS betting, though, only the 1 and 3 get paid. The entry mates took win and show, so the number pays all of the win pool, half of the place pool, and two thirds of the show pool. The second place horse gets place and show, and the horse that finished in fourth behind the 1a gets nothing because he didn't show, he came in third. One of my favorite bets, if an entry is particularly strong, is to take the entry to place. If both ends finish 1-2, sometimes it pays more to place than to win, plus in case you get nosed out for the top spot you have the hedging built into it.
